Dr. William Edward Mangelsdorf, D.D.S., 67, Kingman, Ariz., formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Dallas, Texas, while he and his wife were visiting their son, David, and his family.
He had become seriously ill with a bacterial infection and was hospitalized on Christmas Day. He was improving in the hospital, when on Jan. 10, he suffered a massive stroke.
Cremation rites were performed by Restland Funeral Home, Dallas. A memorial service was held at Good Shephard Lutheran Church, Kingman, Ariz., Jan. 30. In late spring, Bill's ashes will be buried in the Mangelsdorf plot at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Rock Island.

He was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Rock Island, the son of Edward W. and Edna M. Mangelsdorf. He had one sister, Barbara J. Mangelsdorf. His parents and sister lived out their lives and died in Rock Island.
Dr. Bill, as he was known to his dental patients, had his education in Rock Island, attending Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School, Washington Jr. High, Rock Island High School, and Augustana College.
He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Loyola School of Dentistry in Chicago, in 1957. This was followed by a nine-month internship in Children's Dentistry at Eastman Dental Dispensary, Rochester, N.Y.
He served as a dentist with a rank of captain in the Air Force from 1958 to 1961 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma and Williams Air Force Base in Arizona.
In 1961, he returned to Rock Island and set up a private dental practice. He practiced in the Safety Building from 1961 until 1970 when his love for Arizona, the desert and the sunshine drew him back. In 1970 he settled in Kingman, Ariz., to raise his family and to practice dentistry.
Dr. Bill practiced dentistry in Kingman from September 1970 to May 1998. He was a lifelong member of the American Dental Association, serving as president of the Northern Arizona Dental Society. He also served a nine-year term as trustee of the Arizona State Dental Association. Since he retired, his son, Dr. Tim, has carried on with the dental practice in Kingman.
Dr. Bill actively participated and held offices of leadership in Kiwanis. He was a lifetime member of the Kingman Racquetball and Fitness Club, where he did aerobics, worked out and played racquetball. He loved to golf and bowl.
Dr. Bill was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since its conception in the 1980s. Though he has held various offices in the congregation, at present he was again serving as an elder. He was also the L.C.E.F. representative for the congregation in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Mangelsdorf, Dallas, Texas, daughter-in-law, Karen, and granddaughter, Alyssa; Peter E. Mangelsdorf, Tucson, Ariz., daughter-in-law, Lisa, and grandsons, Derek and David; and Dr. Timothy W. Mangelsdorf, D.D.S., Kingman, Ariz., daughter-in-law, Linda, and grandsons, Jesse and Luke; a daughter, Rebecca S. Rossow, son-in-law, the Rev. Brian L. Rossow, and grandsons, Jered and Nigel.
